Cabbage Juice – Vitamin U for Ulcers

One of the first natural kitchen remedies that made a big difference in the way I felt was cabbage juice.  It felt so good in my stomach and at the time I had no idea why – and maybe I still don’t, but clearly it is a powerful rectifier of a stress affected gut.  It is simple to make.

  • 1/2 head cabbage
  • 2 1/2 cup filtered or bottled water

Cut cabbage into blender-sized pieces.  Add the water to liquefy it in the blender (or processor).

Pour it into a seal-able glass container and allow to sit on the counter 3-5 days.  Summer temps need less fermentation time than winter.  The mixture will naturally separate.

Label the lid with the start date.

To harvest, strain and press through a sieve, recap and store in the refrigerator.  Yields about 3  cups of strained cabbage juice depending on the size and moisture content of your cabbage.  See below for dosing.

Notes:  This will smell awful when you open it….which you must do to strain it (which I’d do outside away from the house).  Also consider storing the strained cabbage juice in a tightly sealed container which is easy to open, sip and quickly close.  A plastic shake container or sports drink container with measurements on the side is ideal to easily determine dosage.  (If you have such a container without markings then use a 1/4 cup measure to add water to the container and make a mark at the level of the water.  Then add another 1/4 cup and make the 1/2 cup mark.  Continue until the container has markings every 1/4 cup to the top.)
Some of the strained juice (a tablespoon or so) from this batch may be added to the next batch of blenderized cabbage and the culturing time required can be cut in half.

Dosing.  You cannot overdose on this.  The minimum therapeutic dose for an extremely ulcerated gut is 1/4 cup 4X/day.  Some anecdotal evidence shows that 2 weeks minimum is needed to heal the ulcers.  However if you address the stress so you don’t add to the problem that you are trying to fix, it may take less time.

This can be added to the Easy Broth Drink, but you will need to keep it lidded too.  If you have ulcers you should avoid raw foods, follow your blood type diet and slowly reintroduce your normal foods noting which ones may be problematic.

Thank you for the information on this and Exhaustion. I now know what I need to do..REST! I was wondering if cabbage juice will also be useful for ulcers on the side and underneath part of my tongue. Also what else you might suggest as far as a rinse to help with the pain. I am sure this is a “gut” or should I say “unhelathy” gut issue and that along with not getting enough rest for too long, despite eating fairly healthy and taking may different NSP herbs, has left me in misery. Thank you again for the info. I will be making my first batch of cabbage juice today.

Good idea Melody. Try the swish technique and let us know please. Mouth ulcers are a sign of intestinal inflammation usually due to stress but can also be inflammatory elements in the diet. For now it may be good to avoid raw and reintroduce after you are no longer fatigued.

    pat,
if i blend the cabbage and water in my vitamix, i think it will completely turn it all to liquid with little pulp, if any. your photo looks like a large portion of the cabbage was left intact after blending. which is more desirable for the process?
    thanks.

      Hey CJ,
Pulverizing it to oblivion in a Vitamix is fine. Just use a fine strainer as shown. The microbial action will have more surface area on which to work. Whatever passes through the strainer is good. Enjoy!

I was wondering if this is recommended for type O blood too, even though cabbage is on the foods to avoid list.

    Thank you! 🙂

    • PatBlockND says:

Hey Tori, The blood type lists do not specify whether the cabbage (or any veggie) that was tested on folks was raw, cooked or fermented. Since fermenting or culturing always makes things easier to digest, I’m guessing this cabbage juice won’t give Os a problem.

    Hi Pat,
I made this for Scott and he reports that it gives him a “buzz” when he drinks it. I mixed a 1/4 cup cabbage juice to 3/4 cup spicy v8. He will drink about a half cup and say he feels funny for about 15-20 min after. Is this normal? And how long is it good for in the fridge after you strain it?
    Thanks!
    Danette

      Hey Danette,
I would reduce the dosage to 1 Tablespoon and then build back up. Three days in the ‘fridge should be fine. You can always make smaller batches.
You can also try mixing it into something else or just have him sip about a tablespoon through a straw placed to the back of his mouth so he doesn’t taste it.

When I translate this article to my 102 year old Russian grandma, she just smiles and told me even more recipies how extract juce from cabbage naturally, and how they treat people before the era of antibiotics. Lately she have very sharp memory about it.

I did one head of organic red cabbage juice with clean water and cured SEVERE ulcerates colitis! I was prego or else the hospital would have taken my colon out! It was FULL of ulcers, I had diarrhea for 2 months, and bled out everytime I went to the bathroom…. lost 30-40 lbs (I am petite) I had the blood count of a dead person… The power of cabbage juice is amazing!!!!! I used the red one because its more potent. Thank you for making this website, I will share it on my youtube channel.

Thank you so very much for giving all this info, my Husband just had an Endoscopy last week, we were told his stomach is “raw” from tiny ulcers all over but it is more than likely from being on “blood thinners” he must be on the rest of his life, due to Aneurysms now fixed w/ Stents and 3 TIA’s this past January….
We are all about eating healthy, but he loves his JOWL bacon, and they ain’t taken that away LOL he told me !!!! I really liked reading Tasha’s comment and I will buy a head of Red Cabbage, I also have a blender and a food processor which of these kitchen appliances would you recommend ?
No more medicine, we want to control my Husbands Ulcers by his Diet, and of course the Gastrointestinal Doctor who preformed the Endo recommended a medicine, but my Husband also has Stage 3 Kidney Disease, WE both said no more pills, period ! Then of all things our Family Doctor’s Nurse called yesterday saying my Husband needed to try a PPI !!! I just finally said “no thanks we will use FOOD to cure this issue”…..
    Great site, thanks for sharing….

      Hey Missy,
He will feel much better on this. After doing this for a few weeks I’d fortify his vasculars using Rosehips and Hawthorn Berries, initially 3 of each 2X/day then reduce after a few weeks. For now it may be advisable to reduce raw foods until his inflammation is down.

    Hi Pat,

Really enjoying exploring your website, thank you so much for sharing the information and your experience – invaluable!

I have a quick question. I’ve probably got SIBO so am nervous about introducing any more bacteria into my system until the underlying cause is corrected (in my case likely low stomach acid for long time, not helped by conventional treatment for H.Pylori). I’m using herbs to support my migrating motor complex and taking 2 tsp apple cider vinegar before each meal, which all seems to be helping. i’d like to use the cabbage juice therapy, to fortify my guts before trialling betaine HCL in a couple of weeks, so i’ve been using just fresh juiced cabbage rathen than fermented, as I read this is also a powerful gut tonic. My questions are:

    1. the fresh cabbage juice seems to give me reflux a few hours later. i’m taking about 100ml twice a day on empty stomach. Would you suggest I begin with a lower dose and increase gradually, to see if that makes a difference?

    2. Do you think using the fermented version would be a better idea, even though I likely have bacterial overgrowrth?

    3. Lastly, should I be doing something to protect myself from thyroid issues by eating some extra seaweed whilst drinking cabbage juice daily for a couple of weeks??

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the matter!

    Warmest wishings,

    Katherine

    • PatBlockND says:

      Hello Katherine,
      1. An inflammed gut is irriated by raw foods, so the fermented version would be kinder. The byproduct of the fermentation is lactic acid which is gentler than acetic acid in apple cider vinegar.
      2. As the saying goes, “if you build it they will come”. Please consult with this post for helpful info. If you change the terrain, you change the microbial population. The problem is not the bacteria/yeast/microbes. The problem is that their favorite habitat has been created in your gut.
      3. Fermented or non fermented cabbage juice will not hurt your thyroid. If you want to help/protect your thyroid, do the Gentle Liver Cleanse.
